A 36-year-old woman was stabbed to death in Vuhred, in the Drava valley of north-eastern Slovenia, in the early hours of 20 July 2026. She died at the scene and was found by her son on his return home. Her partner, a 39-year-old man and a citizen of Bosnia and Herzegovina, fled on foot after the killing, swam across the Drava and spent the day hiding in a series of hard-to-reach locations. A large police operation involving criminal investigators, dog handlers, a drone, mounted officers and a helicopter crew searched for him, and he was arrested at about 23:20 that night in front of a residential building, having returned to the area. He did not resist arrest. On 22 July he was brought before an investigating judge on a criminal complaint of murder, and detention was ordered. Police stated that the offence was committed in a cruel and treacherous manner, a qualification that carries a minimum sentence of fifteen years' imprisonment.
