According to an initial reconstruction, the victim had surprised thieves who were rummaging through garages belonging to the public housing blocks. A struggle followed and he was struck in the face, reportedly with a screwdriver. A forensic pathologist attended the scene to establish the cause of death, and several people were called to the Carabinieri barracks to help reconstruct what had happened. A 16-year-old boy was shot and seriously wounded on a public street in Villeurbanne, in the Lyon metropolitan area, at around 1am on Saturday 15 August 2026. He was hit in the abdomen and in one calf and was taken to the Édouard Herriot hospital in Lyon, where he was admitted with his life in danger. A source close to the case said the attackers were travelling on scooters and were armed with a long gun and a handgun, and placed the shooting in the Grandclément quarter. The Lyon public prosecutor's office said an investigation was opened on 15 August for attempted murder by an organised gang, transport and possession of a weapon, and criminal association, and was entrusted to the Rhône organised and specialised crime division. An 18-year-old man died in Trani, in Apulia, in the early hours of 13 August 2026 after being stabbed during a brawl. He was struck three times, including a wound to the back, shortly after midnight in the pinetina area of via Andria, where families with children were also present. He was taken first to a medical post in Trani and then to the hospital in Bisceglie, where he died soon afterwards of his injuries. The victim, who lived in nearby Andria, had been at a barbecue with friends in an area where young people had gathered to watch a solar eclipse. According to the carabinieri's initial reconstruction, a second group arrived, an argument escalated into punches and kicks, and the stabbing followed. Investigators examined surveillance camera footage of the fight and interviewed the young people from both groups. A 17-year-old is under investigation for the homicide. He turned himself in after learning that the victim had died and, in the carabinieri barracks in Trani, admitted inflicting the wounds while maintaining that he had been reacting to an assault. His lawyer said the dispute between the two had arisen over a shared interest in a girl. The knife used, legally held and bought from a gun shop, had not been recovered. The investigation is coordinated by the Trani public prosecutor's office and the juvenile prosecutor's office in Bari.

A 32-year-old man was shot dead in the street near the Barreiro river terminal, south of Lisbon, on the night of Tuesday 11 August 2026. Emergency services were called to the Rua da Recosta at about 10.50pm. The victim, a Guinean national who lived in Germany and was in Portugal on holiday, was shot in the face at close range and died at the scene. According to witnesses, the shooting followed an argument over a board game played for money. Such games were held regularly in the street, drawing dozens of people, after a nearby café closed for the night. The argument escalated into a physical fight; the suspect is reported to have said he was going home to fetch a weapon, and to have returned with a revolver and opened fire. Six cyclists were struck by a car shortly before 10:00 on 9 August 2026 near Lanzo Torinese, in the Turin metropolitan area, on the road towards Coassolo. The incident followed a roadside argument described by reporters as being over a trivial matter. A 16-year-old boy was fatally stabbed during a brawl in Montpellier late on the evening of Sunday 9 August 2026. The attack took place at about 11.20pm on the allée Alberto Giacometti, near the Georges Charpak park in the Port-Marianne district in the east of the city, close to a children's play area. Two groups of young people aged between 16 and 19 — at least seven in all, according to witnesses — fought for reasons that have not been established. On the Monday morning a 17-year-old presented himself at a Montpellier police station, describing himself as the person who inflicted the knife wounds. On Wednesday 12 August he was placed under formal investigation for murder and remanded in provisional detention.

A man was killed in the early hours of 9 August 2026 in a private dwelling in the Sun House complex, in the Cholakova Cheshma locality near the village of Kosharitsa, in Nesebar municipality on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast. The victim was a Ukrainian national living in Bulgaria with refugee status. A 51-year-old monk was arrested on Friday 7 August 2026 in connection with an attempted murder at a monastery in the Paphos district of Cyprus, in which two people were wounded. According to the account given to reporters, a delegation of priests had visited the monastery earlier that day and asked the monk to hand over the keys to his cell and leave the community. Two of those present were then stabbed. A 53-year-old man was wounded in the throat and needed stitches. A 27-year-old priest was wounded in the hand and was treated in the casualty department before being released. Both were taken to hospital and neither died. The monk was taken into custody. A 37-year-old man died on 4 August 2026 after being found with visible signs of violence at the foot of Youth Hill (Mladezhki halm) in Plovdiv. The emergency call was made to 112 at around 17:20 that day, and he died several hours later in hospital. The Plovdiv District Prosecutor's Office is investigating the death as an intentional homicide, and forensic specialists are carrying out active work to establish the facts. On 6 August 2026 it was reported that five juveniles — three girls and two boys — had been charged with intentional murder committed in a particularly torturous manner, with special cruelty, and on hooliganism and sexual motives. According to police, the victim had been contacted online by a 17-year-old girl who told him she was 15 and arranged a meeting; when he arrived at Youth Hill he was met instead by a group of around ten young people. A post-mortem examination found lacerations to the lungs and kidneys and a traumatic brain injury. On 13 August 2026 the appellate court upheld the first-instance ruling keeping all five detained teenagers in custody. The victim was buried the following day in Krichim, his home town, where the funeral service was led by the Metropolitan of Plovdiv and the municipality said residents were calling for tougher sentences for serious crimes committed by minors.

Gardaí believe he was asleep in bed when the house was targeted by a gunman who forced his way in. He survived and was treated at University Hospital Galway for injuries described as non-life-threatening. Gardaí appealed for camera and dash-cam footage from the Cúlán Eiscir Riada area between 2:30am and 4:00am. On 5 August 2026 a man in his 20s was arrested in connection with the shooting and detained at a station in the Garda North Western Region under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007. No prior connection between the group and the victim has emerged, and the motive is still to be established. The investigation, coordinated by the Ravenna prosecutor's office, is not concluded. The municipality has said it intends to join any trial as a civil party.

A Barcelona court ordered his immediate surrender to France, where the offence carries a sentence of life imprisonment.

The prosecution alleges that the stabbing followed an argument at a café on the Krugerplein over a debt of 400 euro, during which the suspect was struck by the victim. A man in an electric wheelchair was set on fire on the afternoon of Tuesday 14 April 2026, at about 15:30, outside the shopping centre on the Smaragdplein in Utrecht. Bystanders pulled him from the burning chair and laid him on the ground, and emergency services took him to hospital and later to a specialist burns centre. He suffered third-degree burns to about a fifth of his body and his life was in danger. He has since returned home, but his lawyer says his recovery is uneven and he is in pain around the clock. Two men, aged 55 and 37, were arrested within a day of the attack and are accused of attempted murder, among other offences. At the first public hearing at the court in Utrecht on 28 July 2026 the prosecution said the attack appeared to have been deliberate: one of the men is alleged to have gone into a supermarket, returned with a bottle of methylated spirits and poured it over the victim, and when the first attempt to set him alight faltered the pair are said to have come back to do it more thoroughly. Both men have been referred for psychiatric assessment. The three men were known to each other and investigators have pointed to a conflict between them.

A 19-year-old woman was beaten to death in the Käfertaler Wald near Mannheim in the early hours of 11 March 2026. Her body was found by a walker later that day, and a 17-year-old was arrested the same day and remanded in custody. In August 2026 the Mannheim public prosecutor's office charged him with her murder, alleging that he killed her out of jealousy. According to the charge, the suspect struck the victim in the face and head more than a dozen times with his fist in a wooded area near Mannheim, then struck her at least forty times with tree branches as she lay on the ground. The prosecution says he had come to suspect her of infidelity and considered himself dishonoured by remarks she had made, and that he decided to kill her after she repeatedly told him she wanted to end the relationship.

A two-month-old boy died in the village of Zhelyazno, in Plovdiv Province, with his death reported to the authorities on 26 February 2026. His father, a 28-year-old man from the same village, was charged with the intentional murder of the infant, who was described in the indictment as having been in a helpless state. The defendant appeared before the Plovdiv Regional Court on 29 July 2026 for a preparatory hearing. He entered the courtroom with his head bowed and said nothing as he was escorted by guards. The hearing was adjourned to 9 September 2026 because some of the injured parties had not been summoned.

A far-right activist was fatally injured in Lyon on 12 February 2026 during violent confrontations between two groups on the margins of a conference given by a left-wing MEP at the city's Sciences Po campus. He died of his injuries two days later. Video of the confrontation published by a national weekly on 17 February shows two groups of about ten people fighting, with a crutch, an umbrella, a tear-gas canister and a smoke flare used. Nine people have been placed under judicial examination in the investigation into the death — eight for intentional homicide and one, a former parliamentary assistant to a left-wing MP, for complicity in murder by instigation. All nine are in pre-trial detention, and three investigating magistrates are handling the case. In July 2026 two of those charged filed complaints with the Lyon public prosecutor against fifteen far-right activists present on 12 February, alleging premeditated violence committed in a group, with weapons and with concealed faces. That complaint falls under a separate preliminary investigation into the conduct of the far-right group, which is being conducted independently of the homicide investigation. A lawyer for one of the charged men argues the two proceedings are inseparable and that evidence gathered in the preliminary investigation is being withheld from the magistrates investigating the death.

The victim, a 2-year-old girl, died in Bordighera from acute cerebral hemorrhage caused by a blow to the head sustained within 48 hours of her death. An autopsy also found two additional internal hemorrhages and signs of chronic malnutrition and neglect dating back roughly a year; doctors said she could have survived had an ambulance been called in time. The victim's mother and her partner are in custody, charged with aggravated maltreatment resulting in death; both maintain their innocence. She was found lifeless on 9 February 2026 at her mother's home in Montenero, a hillside district of Bordighera. The child's funeral was held on 14 August 2026 at the church of the Immacolata in Bordighera, attended by hundreds of people and led by the bishop of the Sanremo-Ventimiglia diocese. The victim's mother, initially authorised to attend, was barred the previous day when the investigating judge revoked the permission on grounds of public order and security. The child's biological father, detained in an unrelated case, attended under escort by the prison police.

A 20-year-old university student was stabbed to death in Oxford Street, close to De Montfort University's Innovation Centre in Leicester, shortly after 5pm on 3 February 2026. An 18-year-old student at a different Leicester university went on trial for his murder at Leicester Crown Court on 10 August 2026. He denies the charges against him, which also include possessing a bladed article and failing to provide the PIN for his phone. The trial is expected to last three weeks. Opening the prosecution case, counsel for the Crown told the jury that the two men had known each other from online gaming and had fallen out over money the defendant believed he was owed, including over a watch the victim had given him to sell which turned out to be a counterfeit. The Crown alleges the defendant attacked the victim in the street over that perceived debt. The jury was told the encounter lasted seconds and was captured on dashcam footage, that the victim was stabbed five times in the chest, and that one wound, 13cm deep, penetrated his heart and caused his death. Four other chest wounds did not contribute to death and a defensive wound was found on his hand. He collapsed in the street and never regained consciousness. A passing driver stopped to help him.

A 28-year-old man was shot in the head and killed on 26 January 2026 in the wooded area of Rogoredo, in Milan, a location known for drug dealing. Prosecutors allege the fatal shot was fired from a distance of about 30 metres. A 41-year-old former officer of the Mecenate police precinct is accused of the killing, which prosecutors say took place in the course of an anti-drug-trafficking operation. On 31 July 2026 the Milan prosecutor's office requested that he be sent for immediate trial, skipping the preliminary hearing stage. An 87-year-old woman was killed on 19 January 2026 in her room at a senior residence in the Döbling district of Vienna. According to the indictment, the suspect went to her room, pushed her onto the bed, strangled her and is believed to have suffocated her with a pillow. He is then alleged to have opened the safe in her room and taken the jewellery inside it along with at least 500 euros in cash. The suspect and the victim had known each other for some time. He is reported to have been a regular visitor to the residence, where a relative of his partner lives. From December 2024 onwards he is said to have repeatedly borrowed money from the woman, ending up owing her more than 20,000 euros which, contrary to an agreement between them, he did not repay. The 61-year-old has been charged with murder and is due to stand trial at the Vienna regional court on 13 August 2026.
