A 50-year-old woman was stabbed in the early morning of 28 July 2026 in the Vingerlingstraat, in the Schipperskwartier district of Antwerp. Police were called shortly after 06:30 after she was found lying in the street with stab wounds. She was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition; her condition later stabilised and she is no longer in danger. The suspect fled before police arrived. Officers set up a perimeter and searched the surrounding area without finding any trace of the attacker, and the federal forensic laboratory was called in to examine traces at the scene while investigators reviewed camera footage. Later the same day local detectives arrested an 18-year-old man at his home. On 29 July 2026 the Antwerp public prosecutor's office confirmed that, after questioning, the suspect was brought before an investigating judge who remanded him in custody on suspicion of attempted murder. Police said the context and circumstances of the attack were not yet clear. On 3 August 2026 the Antwerp pre-trial chamber ruled that he remains in custody. He denies any involvement in the stabbing; his lawyer says he is cooperating with the investigation.
