A 51-year-old monk was arrested on Friday 7 August 2026 in connection with an attempted murder at a monastery in the Paphos district of Cyprus, in which two people were wounded. According to the account given to reporters, a delegation of priests had visited the monastery earlier that day and asked the monk to hand over the keys to his cell and leave the community. Two of those present were then stabbed. A 53-year-old man was wounded in the throat and needed stitches. A 27-year-old priest was wounded in the hand and was treated in the casualty department before being released. Both were taken to hospital and neither died. The monk was taken into custody.
