A 60-year-old man died in a fire in the ground-floor bedroom of a house on the Hoogleedsesteenweg in Roeselare in the early hours of 23 September 2026. The fire broke out at around 00:30 and burned fiercely around the bed; he was found dead in it. His partner was seen at a window in panic when firefighters arrived. They broke the window to bring her out, and she was taken to hospital after inhaling smoke. The rest of the house was undamaged, and a stretch of the road was closed to traffic for a long period while the scene was cordoned off. A support team was called out for the firefighters, who were badly affected by what they found. An investigating judge and court-appointed fire experts were seized to establish the circumstances. Accelerants were found at the scene, pointing to arson. On 24 September the investigating judge in Kortrijk placed the victim's 61-year-old wife under arrest warrant on suspicion of murder, the prosecutor's office for West Flanders reported; the victim is reported to have been doused in petrol.
