A businessman was shot dead in Plovdiv at about 01:00 on 30 September 2026. Police received a report of a man having been shot roughly an hour after midnight and confirmed his death when they reached the scene. He had been shot in the head with a firearm at a property he owned in the city's Западен (Western) district, and according to initial police information the attack came after he returned home from the Botev Plovdiv stadium. The victim was the majority owner of the football club Botev Plovdiv and, since August 2026, chairman of its board of directors; he was also a co-owner of one of the country's largest logistics companies. In 2025 he had undertaken to cover the club's debts of nearly seven million leva and had pursued a long concession of the club's stadium from the municipality. In recent years he had publicly accused local companies and businessmen of exercising control over the police in Plovdiv. Police sealed off the scene and forensic officers carried out examinations there. A special investigative staff was formed, police presence was increased at the main exit routes from Plovdiv and border controls were tightened. Officers were also seen checking municipal refuse lorries travelling towards a depot outside the city, which was assumed to be part of the search for traces connected to the killing. Investigators declined to say at this stage whether any suspect had been identified or whether there were witnesses, and said no line of inquiry was being excluded. The Plovdiv district prosecutor said it was too early to settle on a single version and that all possible evidence was being gathered. The motive had not been established.

A man was found dead by the Skärmarbrink metro station in the south of Stockholm on Tuesday 29 September 2026, and three people were detained on suspicion of murder. According to an initial reconstruction by investigators, she was killed in the house she shared with her 53-year-old son. The son called the emergency number himself and reported what he had done. Carabinieri traced and identified him as he wandered on foot through the streets of Pellezzano, and he was detained. Investigators attributed the killing to long-standing family disputes. A 33-year-old woman was killed with a bladed weapon at a dwelling on calle Joan Fuster Zaragoza in Benidorm, Alicante, in an incident reported on 28 September 2026. According to 20 Minutos the killing took place over the preceding weekend, and police were investigating it as a suspected case of gender-based violence. The Policía Nacional arrested three men, aged 30, 40 and 45: one as the alleged perpetrator, who is reported to have been the victim's partner, and two others over their part in disposing of the remains. Investigators said the body was dismembered and moved in suitcases to scrubland between Benidorm and the neighbouring municipality of Finestrat, where it was set alight; fire crews attended the resulting blaze, which caused only minor damage to surrounding vegetation. The two alleged accessories went to the police station themselves and reported that a man they knew had told them he had killed his partner during an argument at his home and had then threatened them into helping him move the body. One is said to have provided a vehicle and the other to have helped carry it. Officers located the body, established a cordon around the suspect's home and arrested him a short time later. Police said formal identification of the body was still outstanding. The victim had made no previous complaints of domestic violence against her partner.

A man was shot dead shortly after 15:00 on the afternoon of Friday 25 September 2026 on a crowded restaurant terrace on the NDSM quay in Amsterdam-Noord. Many people were on the terrace at the time. A witness eating in the restaurant with his wife described hearing two loud bangs, people running into the building, and then learning that they had been shots. The couple hid under a table before leaving with everyone else. Other customers told a city newspaper that an argument over a loose dog had preceded the shooting. Footage published shortly after the killing appears to show the suspect throwing the firearm used moments earlier into the water, and shouting in the direction of the terrace. A suspect is in custody. He is held under restrictions and may have contact only with his lawyer, and police have released no further information about him. No charge has been reported.

A Tunisian man died on 25 September 2026 after being stabbed at the height of an argument during the preceding night in the Golosine district of Verona. Ambulance crews took him in a very serious condition to the Borgo Trento hospital, where he died shortly afterwards of the severity of his injuries. On a first reconstruction, reported in conditional terms, the victim is said to have been involved in a dispute with a group of Polish nationals described as drivers of the golf carts that carry tourists around the city centre. The suspected killer was detained and was being held at police headquarters in Verona. No charge had been confirmed at the time of reporting.

A 29-year-old police officer was shot in the head and killed during a police operation at Kraśnik Górny, near Bolesławiec in Lower Silesia, on Thursday 24 September 2026. Officers from the district police headquarters in Bolesławiec were carrying out operational activities against a person suspected of thefts. At about 11:00 a shooting broke out on the grounds of one of the properties. According to the regional prosecutor's office in Jelenia Góra, a 33-year-old man who returned home while the police operation was under way fired twice in the direction of the officers. One of the bullets struck the 29-year-old officer in the head. An air ambulance was called immediately and flew him to hospital, where doctors fought for many hours to save his life. He did not survive. The death was reported on 25 September. The man who fired was detained at the scene by the remaining officers and was not injured.

A priest was killed and four other people were injured in a knife attack at the convent of the Benedictine Sisters in Jarosław, in Podkarpackie voivodeship, before midday on Thursday 24 September 2026. On the investigators' account, the suspect entered the convent kitchen, took a knife and attacked five people — four men and a woman. The priest, who had tried to stop the attacker, died. Two of the injured remain in a serious condition in hospital in Jarosław, and their condition had not worsened as of the Friday. The injured woman is being treated in hospital in Przeworsk. On 26 September a court granted the district prosecutor's application and imposed three months' pre-trial detention on the suspect, a 31-year-old Ukrainian citizen, running until 23 December 2026. The court specified that the detention should be served in hospital conditions. The suspect was not brought to the hearing because of his state of health, and is to be placed in a medical facility with a reinforced security wing; the prosecution has not disclosed which.

The dismembered body of a 39-year-old man was found on the evening of Thursday 24 September 2026 in an apartment in via Gulli, in the Borgo Vittoria district of Turin. He was from Chivasso, in the province of Turin. According to the prosecution's account he was killed by blows from a club and by stab wounds. The investigation began with a call to the emergency number from the mother of a 26-year-old man, who told police in distress that her son had confessed to having badly hurt someone. On the direction of the Turin public prosecutor's office, police placed three people under a holding order. A man is suspected of homicide and of concealment of a corpse. Two women, one of them the tenant of the apartment where the body was found, are suspected of aiding an offender and of joint participation in the concealment of the corpse. The tenant, a 47-year-old teacher, had not appeared at the school where she worked since the start of the academic year, and colleagues had been asking for weeks where she was. Investigators are still working to establish whether the victim was killed in the apartment or brought there already dead. One line of inquiry concerns a drug debt. The prosecutor's office said it would put its requests on the validation of the holding order and on the detention of those held to the judge for preliminary investigations, and the validation hearing was set for the afternoon of 26 September 2026.

A 36-year-old woman was fatally injured in a knife attack at around 12:25 on Wednesday 23 September 2026 in a municipal accommodation facility on the Grimpingstraße in Coesfeld, North Rhine-Westphalia. Witnesses found her with stab wounds to the upper body at her home address. She died at the scene despite immediate resuscitation attempts. Reporting describes her as a mother of three. Police arrested a suspect: on first findings, the victim's 43-year-old estranged husband, a Turkish national. He was detained shortly before midnight in the Achtermannstraße in Münster after a tip-off from a witness. A 60-year-old man died in a fire in the ground-floor bedroom of a house on the Hoogleedsesteenweg in Roeselare in the early hours of 23 September 2026. The fire broke out at around 00:30 and burned fiercely around the bed; he was found dead in it. His partner was seen at a window in panic when firefighters arrived. They broke the window to bring her out, and she was taken to hospital after inhaling smoke. The rest of the house was undamaged, and a stretch of the road was closed to traffic for a long period while the scene was cordoned off. A support team was called out for the firefighters, who were badly affected by what they found. An investigating judge and court-appointed fire experts were seized to establish the circumstances. Accelerants were found at the scene, pointing to arson. On 24 September the investigating judge in Kortrijk placed the victim's 61-year-old wife under arrest warrant on suspicion of murder, the prosecutor's office for West Flanders reported; the victim is reported to have been doused in petrol.

A 21-year-old man from Roermond was shot dead on the evening of Sunday 20 September 2026 in a residential district of the town. Several residents called the emergency number at around 21:50 after hearing a number of shots on the Terbaansweg. A trauma helicopter was among the services called out. The victim was given resuscitation at the scene but died there. Part of the street was cordoned off, and many residents gathered outside afterwards. A police forensic team examined the scene. Officers collected footage from security and doorbell cameras in the neighbourhood and spoke to possible witnesses. In the days that followed no arrest was made and the investigation team appealed for anyone who had seen or heard something to come forward. On Thursday 24 September two men reported themselves to the police and were arrested on suspicion of involvement in the shooting. No charge has yet been reported.

A foreign national, he did not survive wounds inflicted to the rear of the thorax and died at the scene. On Wednesday 23 September the Polícia Judiciária detained four people, all members of the same family and all Portuguese nationals: two brothers aged 19 and 25, their 49-year-old mother and their 54-year-old father. At about 11.20pm on Wednesday 16 September 2026, emergency services were called to Lloyd Baker Street in Clerkenwell, in the London Borough of Islington, after reports of a stabbing. They found a 28-year-old man with stab wounds. He was taken to hospital, where he died of his injuries the following day. The Metropolitan Police opened a murder investigation. No arrests had been made at the time of reporting and detectives appealed for information, noting that the victim was found in a residential street and that members of the public might hold material evidence. The victim's next of kin were informed and were being supported by specialist officers. Police were given enhanced stop-and-search powers covering an area stretching from Caledonian Road through Clerkenwell to Hoxton, in force from the Friday afternoon until the following morning. A 40-year-old inmate was stabbed to death at about 15:00 on Monday 14 September 2026 in a corridor of the Forensic Therapeutic Centre (FTZ) Garsten, a secure institution for mentally ill offenders in Upper Austria. The attack was recorded by a surveillance camera. Prison officers who heard screams arrived within moments and attempted resuscitation, but he died of several stab wounds to the chest. A 63-year-old fellow inmate is suspected of the killing and has confessed. The Steyr public prosecutor's office confirmed that the weapon was a butter knife and is investigating on suspicion of murder, naming frustration at not feeling heard by the authorities as a possible motive. According to the first reports, the son-in-law suffocated her by placing a bag over her head after she had expressed a medical need, then telephoned the emergency number himself to say what he had done. According to the Guardia Civil, one of the three got into a vehicle and tried to run over the other two; one managed to avoid the car, while the victim was struck and pinned against a wall on Avenida Federico García Lorca. Emergency services found him in respiratory arrest and could not save him. A foreign couple, a 79-year-old man and a 62-year-old woman, were found dead on the afternoon of Friday 11 September 2026 inside a water cistern at their home in Lagos, in the district of Faro. According to the Polícia Judiciária, the victims were beaten with a blunt object at the property, and the suspect then dragged the bodies into the cistern to hide them and tried to break them down with chemicals. The suspect, a 45-year-old man who worked for the couple as a caretaker, was found by the GNR near the scene carrying a large amount of cash and valuables believed to belong to the victims. He was arrested on suspicion of two counts of aggravated homicide and desecration of a corpse, and after a first judicial hearing before the investigating judge in Portimão he was remanded in pre-trial detention. The motive remains unknown, and the investigation is continuing into whether anyone else was involved.

An 88-year-old woman was fatally injured at her home in San Sebastián de los Reyes, in the Community of Madrid, in the middle of the week beginning 7 September 2026. On Thursday 10 September a carer found her in bed with injuries to her arms, and found her 90-year-old husband dead by hanging in the same home. She was taken to hospital, where she died of her injuries on Friday 11 September. On 14 September 2026 the Government Delegation against Gender-based Violence confirmed the killing as a case of gender-based violence. There had been no previous complaints of gender-based violence against the husband, who is presumed to have killed himself after the attack, so no criminal proceedings can follow. She was the 37th woman recorded as killed by gender-based violence in Spain in 2026.

A 79-year-old woman was found dead in her flat in Moncalieri, a comune bordering Turin, on 8 September 2026. Neighbours raised the alarm after noticing a strong smell coming from the address; according to the reporting she had been dead for some days. She had a wound to the head, and an iron pipe lay a few metres from her body, which investigators believe may have been the weapon. Her brother was found dead in the same flat, having hanged himself; his body had been found in the same flat on the evening of 8 September, but the carabinieri did not release the news until the following day. Inside the flat, stuck to a wardrobe, was a note in which he confessed to having killed her. The carabinieri opened an investigation to reconstruct what had happened. Because the man is dead, no prosecution can follow, and the motive has not been established.

The body of a 40-year-old woman was found at about five in the morning on Tuesday 8 September 2026 in a burning garage at a house in Launaguet, a commune north of Toulouse in Haute-Garonne. Her body was badly burned. An investigation was opened for the murder of a partner, led by the Toulouse Saint Michel gendarmerie research brigade. The victim's former partner, a 54-year-old man, was found nearby with a serious head injury and in a life-threatening condition. According to the prosecutor's office he was carrying a handgun that may have fired the cartridge case recovered from the garage. The victim was the mother of two children, the younger of them from her relationship with that man. He was already known to the courts: he was under judicial supervision that barred him from her home in Launaguet, from making contact with her and from carrying a weapon, and he was due to appear before the Toulouse criminal court in January over a complaint she had made about malicious calls, invasion of her privacy and psychological violence between October 2024 and July 2025. The prosecutor's office had issued her with a serious danger alarm phone in August 2025.

Early on Sunday 6 September 2026 — reported at about 06:30 — the GNR was alerted by residents and family members that a 73-year-old woman had been found dead inside her home in the village of Póvoa da Galega, in the parish of Milharado, Mafra, in the district of Lisbon. She had been stabbed. The suspect is her grandson, who lived with her; according to a police source the motive is unknown and the two had a good relationship. After the killing the suspect is reported to have caused disturbances and damage at a hotel and at several homes near the one he shared with his grandmother. A police source described him as behaving erratically, allegedly after taking drugs, for which he was already known to the authorities. He was detained by the GNR and the investigation passed to the Polícia Judiciária. Brought before a judge at the court in Sintra for a first judicial questioning, he was remanded in custody at the Lisbon prison to await trial.

Atteinte de plusieurs tirs, notamment au thorax, la victime est décédée quasi immédiatement à l'intérieur du véhicule. Le second véhicule a ensuite pris la fuite. Une enquête a été ouverte pour déterminer les circonstances de l'homicide. Aucune interpellation n'est rapportée à ce stade et, selon les premiers éléments, aucun lien avec le narcotrafic n'est établi, même si les sources locales replacent le fait divers dans un contexte de recrudescence d'homicides par arme à feu dans l'agglomération lyonnaise.

Secondo la prima ricostruzione degli inquirenti, l'ex compagno le avrebbe teso un agguato bloccandola nel garage di casa a Firenze, l'avrebbe poi chiusa nel bagagliaio dell'auto per raggiungere l'autostrada A1 e l'avrebbe infine lanciata dal viadotto Alteta, al bivio tra la Panoramica e la Direttissima. L'uomo, di 36 anni, si è poi tolto la vita gettandosi dallo stesso viadotto. La donna, che aveva con sé un telefono cellulare rimasto nel bagagliaio, avrebbe chiamato il 112 e un amico per chiedere aiuto; accortosi del telefono, l'uomo avrebbe fermato l'auto e glielo avrebbe strappato. La segnalazione ha fatto scattare le ricerche dell'auto: gli agenti della polizia stradale hanno trovato il veicolo fermo sulla corsia d'emergenza e i due corpi sotto il viadotto. Le indagini, coordinate dalla procura e condotte dalla squadra mobile di Firenze, stanno ricostruendo se la donna sia stata uccisa prima di essere gettata dal viadotto. La relazione tra i due era terminata da poco tempo.

A newborn baby girl was found dead at a property in the Wincobank area of Sheffield on the morning of Sunday 30 August 2026. South Yorkshire Police received reports of a concern for the safety of a newborn baby at 5.58am and officers searched a property on Holywell Heights, where the baby was found. Despite the efforts of officers and paramedics she was pronounced dead at the scene. Seven people were arrested on suspicion of murder and remained in custody. The force said it was still working to establish the ages of some of those arrested. A murder investigation has been launched after a woman's body was found in a park in Liverpool on 28 August 2026. Merseyside Police were called to Stanley Park at about 17:25 BST and found the body, in a black bin bag, in bushes in part of a walled garden between the Anfield and Goodison Park grounds. The force said the body was that of a white woman in her 70s, and that it could have been in the park for a number of weeks. She was described as about 5ft 2in tall, of small build, with strawberry blonde hair, and was found wearing a cerise pink t-shirt. The description was issued by police because the victim had not yet been identified. The detective superintendent leading the investigation said the force was doing everything in its power to find whoever was responsible, and appealed to walkers who had been in the park — and specifically in the area of the walled garden — in recent days or weeks to come forward with any information. Officers kept an area inside the park cordoned off and a mobile police station was to be set up there the following day. Two weeks later the woman had still not been identified. Members of the public had supplied 73 names, all of which were checked and eliminated; it had not been possible to compare dental records, and forensic tests produced no match on the national DNA database. Officers had taken CCTV from 30 private and commercial cameras in the area and had spoken to the occupants of 625 properties around the park, and were appealing to anyone who had flown a drone over the park in recent months to check their footage. The senior investigating officer said the investigation remained ongoing and that the force remained determined to identify the woman and to find the person or persons responsible for her murder.

Both suspects fled; the boyfriend was traced and questioned the same evening, and investigators believe the knife was his although he is not thought to have struck the blows. The minor had not been located, and searches of both homes had been carried out. Witnesses gave carabinieri and the prosecutor two versions of events, and the sequence remains under investigation.

A 54-year-old man was beaten to death in the car park of viale Tritone at Pinarella di Cervia, on the Ravenna coast, during the night of 18–19 July 2026. He was living in a camper van parked there. According to the investigators' reconstruction, he was confronted in the car park near his camper van, tried to get away, and was caught and struck repeatedly with kicks and punches to the head and chest, including after he was already on the ground. He managed to move a few metres before collapsing beside the tyre of a lorry. Carabinieri who had been called to the area on the morning of 19 July over damage to a nearby camper van found him lying seriously injured with clear signs of the beating. He was taken to the Bufalini hospital in Cesena, where he died of his injuries on 22 July. On 7 August 2026 four young people aged between 19 and 23, from the Forlì area, were detained and taken to prison, accused of aggravated joint homicide committed for futile motives. Investigators reached them through footage from public and private CCTV cameras and from a lorry's dash cam, cross-checked with police databases, witness statements, wiretaps and surveillance. No prior connection between the group and the victim has emerged, and the motive is still to be established. The investigation, coordinated by the Ravenna prosecutor's office, is not concluded. The municipality has said it intends to join any trial as a civil party.

Her body was found in the apartment on the evening of 20 July, wrapped in a sheet and hidden inside the storage compartment of the bed, after a friend who had not heard from her for about ten days entered the flat using the landlord's keys and called police on noticing a strong smell. The autopsy attributed death to severe cranial polytrauma and violent compression of the mouth and neck, consistent with mechanical asphyxiation, and placed it roughly ten days before the body was found. On 5 August 2026 police arrested the victim's former partner, a 45-year-old Romanian man who was already under investigation. He is held to be strongly implicated in aggravated domestic abuse, femicide and concealment of a corpse. According to witnesses, the suspect had continued to monitor the victim after the relationship ended.

The remains of two young soldiers from French Polynesia were recovered in the Bouches-du-Rhône in July 2026, several years after their families reported them missing. Six adult members of one family, originally from New Caledonia and living in the Claret quarter of Toulon, have been under formal investigation since May 2026 for murder, human trafficking, unlawful imprisonment by an organised gang and failure to report crimes, the exact grounds varying between them. Five of the six are in pre-trial detention. According to the Toulon public prosecutor's office, the family is suspected of having exploited the isolation of young servicemen who had come from the Pacific islands to be stationed in Toulon, robbing them, assaulting them and holding them captive in the Toulon area between 2011 and 2023. Seven other young Polynesian soldiers told investigators they had been "progressively stripped of their means of payment and their identity documents, assaulted and held captive". Residents of the quarter, where the Polynesian community is large, described the family arriving at parties at their height with alcohol and provisions. The investigation was still under way at the time of the cited report.

Two people were killed and six injured on 4 May 2026 when a man drove a car several hundred metres through the pedestrian zone in the centre of Leipzig, striking a number of people. A 63-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man died. The six injured were aged between 21 and 87, two of them seriously. The driver brought the car to a stop himself and allowed himself to be arrested without resistance. He was initially placed in a psychiatric hospital. On 28 August 2026, nearly four months after the attack, the public prosecutor's office charged the 33-year-old German with two counts of murder and 85 counts of attempted murder, together with 91 counts of serious dangerous interference with road traffic. The higher number of attempted-murder counts reflects everyone the car was driven at along the route, not only those it struck. The Regional Court in Leipzig has still to decide whether to admit the indictment and when any trial might begin. Because a provisional written forensic-psychiatric opinion found no indication of diminished criminal responsibility, the prosecution applied to lift the psychiatric placement and for an arrest warrant. Investigators reported that the accused had been a voluntary psychiatric inpatient until his discharge at the end of April, days before the attack, and that he was already known to police in connection with threats and offences against personal honour in his social circle. No information was given about the background or motive. Investigators had previously said there was no indication of a political or religious motive.

A 20-year-old man was shot in the chest and killed at dawn on 7 April 2026 as he walked home from work in the Ponticelli district of Naples. He had no connection to organised crime. On the account reconstructed by the investigating carabinieri, coordinated by the anti-mafia prosecutors and the juvenile prosecutors, the fatal shot was fired by a 23-year-old acquaintance of the victim. Shortly beforehand the suspect, together with a 17-year-old, had been involved in a firefight against a rival group who had come into the district in a dark SUV. He was near the victim's home, still holding the weapon and boasting about how he had responded, when the shot that killed the victim was fired. The victim was not its intended target. On 14 April 2026 the suspect gave himself up to the carabinieri, accompanied by his lawyer, and was served with a holding order for intentional homicide aggravated by mafia purposes and for aggravated firearms offences. On 26 September 2026 the Court of Cassation upheld an appeal by his lawyers and annulled the charge of intentional homicide, remitting that head of accusation to the court that reviews precautionary measures for re-decision. The firearms counts were not affected.

A male anaesthetist was killed in his home in Sector 3 of Bucharest on the evening of Tuesday 31 March 2026. According to investigators, a 39-year-old woman was in his flat at about 9pm and attacked him with a knife. He suffered multiple wounds, including a chest wound that damaged his heart. After the attack the woman is said to have taken the victim's telephone and set fire to the flat using flammable substances and materials before leaving. Firefighters put out the blaze and brought the victim out of the property; paramedics attempted resuscitation but pronounced him dead. A 19-year-old woman was beaten to death in the Käfertaler Wald near Mannheim in the early hours of 11 March 2026. Her body was found by a walker later that day, and a 17-year-old was arrested the same day and remanded in custody. In August 2026 the Mannheim public prosecutor's office charged him with her murder, alleging that he killed her out of jealousy. According to the charge, the suspect struck the victim in the face and head more than a dozen times with his fist in a wooded area near Mannheim, then struck her at least forty times with tree branches as she lay on the ground. A far-right activist was fatally injured in Lyon on 12 February 2026 during violent confrontations between two groups on the margins of a conference given by a left-wing MEP at the city's Sciences Po campus. He died of his injuries two days later. Video of the confrontation published by a national weekly on 17 February shows two groups of about ten people fighting, with a crutch, an umbrella, a tear-gas canister and a smoke flare used. Nine people have been placed under judicial examination in the investigation into the death — eight for intentional homicide and one, a former parliamentary assistant to a left-wing MP, for complicity in murder by instigation. All nine are in pre-trial detention, and three investigating magistrates are handling the case. The victim was 23 years old. In July 2026 two of those charged filed complaints with the Lyon public prosecutor against fifteen far-right activists present on 12 February, alleging premeditated violence committed in a group, with weapons and with concealed faces. That complaint falls under a separate preliminary investigation into the conduct of the far-right group, which is being conducted independently of the homicide investigation. A lawyer for one of the charged men argues the two proceedings are inseparable and that evidence gathered in the preliminary investigation is being withheld from the magistrates investigating the death. On Tuesday 22 September 2026 eight further people were arrested in connection with the case. Five of them were placed under judicial examination for criminal conspiracy, and four of those also for aggravated violence committed with the use or threat of a weapon, in a group and with the face deliberately concealed, followed by an incapacity not exceeding eight days. The prosecutor sought pre-trial detention for three of them and judicial supervision for the other two. These eight were arrested over possible participation in the brawls that took place on the day of the victim's death, and their charges fall under the separate preliminary investigation into the violence rather than under the homicide investigation, whose nine charges are unchanged.

A 20-year-old university student was stabbed to death in Oxford Street, close to De Montfort University's Innovation Centre in Leicester, shortly after 5pm on 3 February 2026. A 19-year-old student at a different Leicester university went on trial for his murder at Leicester Crown Court on 10 August 2026, denying charges that also included possessing a bladed article and failing to provide the PIN for his phone. On 25 August 2026, after a two-week trial, the jury found him not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter, of having an offensive weapon and of failing to provide the PIN. He was sentenced the same day to a total of 10 years' imprisonment. Passing sentence, the judge said the defendant had developed a "seething resentment" towards the victim, and told him: "You took a knife to the fight, you used it, this was not a one-off thrust of the knife but five separate applications and it should have been obvious to you this carried a high risk of serious harm." Opening the prosecution case, counsel for the Crown told the jury that the two men had known each other from online gaming and had fallen out over money the defendant believed he was owed, including over a watch the victim had given him to sell which turned out to be a counterfeit. The Crown alleges the defendant attacked the victim in the street over that perceived debt. The jury was told the encounter lasted seconds and was captured on dashcam footage, that the victim was stabbed five times in the chest, and that one wound, 13cm deep, penetrated his heart and caused his death. Four other chest wounds did not contribute to death and a defensive wound was found on his hand. He collapsed in the street and never regained consciousness. A passing driver stopped to help him.

An architect from Barcelona died on 26 December 2025 at his apartment in Baqueira, in the Val d'Aran in Lleida province. He had travelled there with his partner for the Christmas holidays. After being taken ill following a dinner he was treated at the hospital in Vielha, and returned to the apartment with her the day after his admission. He died there on St Stephen's Day. His partner had not called the emergency services about his condition, which drew the suspicion of the Catalan police and led in time to her arrest as the alleged perpetrator of an offence of homicide. She was detained in Madrid on Wednesday 23 September 2026. On Friday 25 September she appeared before the court of first instance at Vielha, which took her statement and, as the prosecution had requested, ordered her committal to preventive prison, avoidable on bail of 80,000 euros. She paid the sum at the court within two hours and was released on provisional liberty. She is 64 and a member of a well-known hotel-business family.

An 18-year-old university student was fatally stabbed in Southampton on 3 December 2025. The man responsible was convicted of murder and jailed for life at Southampton Crown Court, with a minimum term of 21 years set at a sentencing hearing in June 2026. After the stabbing he had falsely told police that he was himself the victim of a racist attack. The case is at an appellate stage with two challenges running in opposite directions. In June 2026 the Solicitor General referred the sentence to the Court of Appeal as unduly lenient. A 21-year-old man has been found guilty of the murder of a Cork postman. A 17-year-old boy was separately found guilty of the same murder on 30 July 2026. Victim impact statements are to be heard before he is sentenced. On 31 August 2026 the 21-year-old was given the mandatory life sentence for murder, backdated to 3 July, with credit directed for time already spent in custody on the matter. The judge described the circumstances of the death as brutal, saying that while the action that took the victim's life was not prolonged, it was a brutal one, and noted that the defendant does not accept the murder verdict although he accepts that he caused the death. Two teenage co-accused cannot be named because of their age. Both pleaded guilty to manslaughter and not guilty to murder. The State refused to accept that plea from the older of the two, aged 17, who was then convicted of murder by a jury; the plea of the younger, aged 16, was accepted by the Director of Public Prosecutions. Both teenagers were sentenced on 11 September 2026. The 17-year-old received 11 years in detention with the final three years suspended, together with a concurrent two-year sentence for assaulting a man earlier the same evening. The 16-year-old received two and a half years in detention with the final six months suspended. The court heard how the killing came about. The town had been celebrating a Junior B hurling championship win, with the players given a lap of honour and much of the population on the main street, and a series of brawls followed outside a pub at closing time. The victim struck the girlfriend of the man later convicted of his murder, accounts varying as to whether that was accidental or deliberate, and the three then went to the victim's home on what the sentencing judge described as an "armed retaliatory expedition". The judge noted there was very little evidence of what occurred in the early hours outside the house.

Two worshippers were killed in an attack on the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue in Manchester on 2 October 2025, during Yom Kippur. A 35-year-old Syrian-born British citizen drove a car into the synagogue gates and then attacked people with a knife while wearing a fake suicide belt. One victim, aged 66, died of multiple knife wounds inflicted by the attacker. The other, aged 53, was killed by a single police gunshot wound as he held the building's doors shut against the attacker. Three other men were treated in hospital for serious injuries and have since been released. On 20 August 2026 Counter Terrorism Policing North West charged a 49-year-old Iraqi national, of Higher Broughton in Salford, with failing to disclose information regarding terrorist activity under section 38B of the Terrorism Act 2000. He was remanded in custody to appear before Westminster Magistrates' Court. The assistant chief constable with operational responsibility for Counter Terrorism Policing North West confirmed that the charge is directly related to the attack on the synagogue and described it as a significant development in the investigation. A senior coroner is to examine both deaths at an inquest. At a pre-inquest review on 3 September 2026, government lawyers acting for the home secretary told the coroner that disclosing MI5 material would pose a serious risk to national security. Counsel for both families said they were concerned that the intelligence material may contradict the home secretary's statement to the Commons that the attacker had never been referred to the Prevent programme and was not known to counter-terrorism policing or the security services. A 30-year-old woman was stabbed to death outside her home in Bremen in October 2025 by her former partner, the father of one of her children. Masked, he lay in wait for her, having waited about three hours in a car until she left the building with two of her three children to go to a playground. He approached her from behind and stabbed her eight times, wounding her in the head, neck and upper body. She died at the scene. Immediately after the attack he pushed one of the children to the ground as the child tried to flee and stabbed the child in the back. The child was injured and survived. On 30 September 2026 the Landgericht Bremen convicted the man, then 33, of murder and sentenced him to life imprisonment. The court additionally established the particular gravity of guilt, which largely rules out early release after fifteen years. It convicted him of causing bodily harm in respect of the attack on the child. The presiding judge described the killing as a kind of execution, and the court found that he had acted with treachery and from base motives. According to the court there had been custody disputes over the couple's two-year-old daughter after their separation, and in carrying out the attack he was concerned not with the child's welfare but with asserting his authority as a man and a father. The verdict followed the prosecution's submissions; the defence had argued for acquittal.

A 78-year-old woman was suffocated at her home in Mäder, in the Feldkirch district of Vorarlberg, in October 2025. Her 57-year-old daughter, who had been visiting, was found to have held her mouth and nose shut. A court medical examiner found bleeding and bruising at several points on the body consistent with defensive and struggle injuries, a compressed chest and discolouration around the mouth and nose, and concluded that blunt force had been applied. The defence suggested the victim's lung disease might have caused her death; the examiner found the overall findings pointed unambiguously to a killing, and investigators excluded any other perpetrator. On Monday 3 August 2026 a jury court in Feldkirch committed the daughter to a forensic therapeutic centre. A psychiatric opinion excluded criminal responsibility at the time of the act, so she was not convicted: the jury found unanimously that the act would have constituted murder had she been criminally responsible. She had worked for over twenty years in a social-care profession and had long struggled with anxiety, depression, agitation and restlessness, had repeatedly stopped taking her medication, and says she remembers nothing of the act, stating only that it was possible she had killed her mother. She accepted the ruling and the prosecution waived any appeal, so it is final.

A 52-year-old man died in Plovdiv after being attacked on the evening of 19 September 2025 at the city's "Yug" bus station, where he was waiting for a coach to Bursa. According to the prosecution he encountered the suspect, who was in the area with a companion, and asked why they had robbed him earlier that day; the suspect then took a wooden stake and attacked him. A 34-year-old man from Katowice was abducted in the middle of September 2025 and later killed. According to the investigation, the perpetrators lured him out of his flat, bound him and pushed him into a car. His body was found on 29 November 2025 in a cemetery in the village of Żytno, near Radomsko in the Łódź Voivodeship, having been thrown into an elderly woman's grave; his identity was confirmed by DNA testing. The main suspect left Poland after the killing and was detained in Ostrava, in the Czech Republic, in October 2025 under a European Arrest Warrant on suspicion of the abduction. He was extradited to Poland by the Silesian department of the National Prosecutor's Office for organised crime and corruption. A 17-year-old girl from Abcoude was killed in the early hours of 20 August 2025 beside a cycle path in Duivendrecht, south-east of Amsterdam, as she rode home on her electric bicycle after a night out. At about 04:00 she called the emergency number herself to say she was being attacked. Police rushed to the scene but arrived too late and found her body on the verge beside the water. She had been stabbed, among other injuries, in the neck. The killing caused shock across the Netherlands. A man of about 23 was arrested and charged with her murder, together with a violent rape in Amsterdam on 15 August 2025 and an attempted rape with aggravated assault on 10 August 2025. The case opened with a first pre-trial hearing at the Amsterdam court on 25 November 2025. At a second hearing on 11 February 2026 he confessed to all three offences. In April 2026 the court ordered further observation of the suspect at the Pieter Baan Centre, the national forensic psychiatric observation clinic, and set the substantive trial for 18, 20 and 22 January 2027. At a brief pre-trial hearing on 15 September 2026 it emerged that the clinic's report on his mental state would not be ready before the end of October.

A social worker employed by the municipal welfare service in Gent was killed on the evening of 13 August 2025 during a round of home visits. When he failed to arrive at his second appointment, police went to the first address he had called at, a social housing unit in the Kikvorsstraat in the Nieuw Gent district, and found him there. He had been killed with violence. He was 56. The resident of the flat, a man who had lived in Belgium for years and had a psychiatric history, had left the scene. He was arrested hours later on the other side of the city and has been held since on suspicion of murder. A reconstruction was carried out at the scene in May 2026. What drove the killing remains unclear. The case prompted a wave of public reaction in Gent and beyond, including a silent vigil the day after the killing and a memorial gathering in Nieuw Gent attended by around a thousand people. It also led welfare services across Flanders to accelerate existing plans on staff safety, including emergency call buttons, redesigned premises with better escape routes, and checklists for home visits.

The shooting took place during an altercation involving several people, and those responsible fled afterwards. A 41-year-old Portuguese man was arrested in the Marseille region of southern France on 24 June 2026 under a European Arrest Warrant, following a joint operation between the Portuguese judicial police and the French judicial authorities. He was surrendered to Portugal and, after a first judicial interrogation, was remanded in pre-trial detention on suspicion of aggravated homicide.

A 71-year-old man was beaten to death with a wooden pole at his home in Barrô, in the municipality of Águeda, on 20 July 2025. His body was found two days later. According to the prosecution, the two men met on the road in front of the house and drank a beer together before the attacker struck the victim repeatedly, notably to the head. Investigators found the victim's phone and house keys missing and the access gate locked from the outside, and concluded that the perpetrator had made sure the victim could neither call for help nor leave. DNA and fingerprints on a beer bottle, and biological traces on a wooden pole recovered from the yard, matched the man later arrested. He was detained in October 2025 and held in pre-trial custody, and on 29 July 2026 the court in Aveiro convicted him of aggravated homicide and sentenced him to 16 years and six months in prison.

A 39-year-old man from Kerkrade was shot dead on the Wilhelminastraat in Bocholtz, in the Dutch province of Limburg, on 29 May 2025. The shooting followed a dispute over the return of a motorcycle club jacket. Two gunmen opened fire almost simultaneously; a 26-year-old man from Bocholtz was shot by the second gunman and survived. On 11 August 2026 the Limburg district court sentenced a 22-year-old man to eleven years' imprisonment for the manslaughter of the 39-year-old and for the attempted manslaughter of another man. The prosecution service had charged murder, or in the alternative manslaughter, and had demanded thirteen years. The other gunman, a 43-year-old man from Heerlen, was convicted earlier in 2026 of the attempted manslaughter of the surviving victim and of unlawful firearm possession, and was sentenced to five years.

The fatal attack took place below the home of the man later convicted of it, a few hundred metres from a bar in via Borgo Santa Caterina where a quarrel had begun between two small groups of young people over football allegiance. On 8 September 2026 the assize court in Bergamo sentenced the man responsible, who was 20 at the time of the killing, to eighteen years and one month in prison for striking the victim with a single knife blow that wounded him fatally. The prosecutor had asked for 24 years; the defence had argued for acquittal on the grounds of self-defence. The victim's mother, speaking after the verdict, described a difficult social climate in which young people go about armed.

A 41-year-old man was shot dead on the terrace of a hotel in Rijswijk, in the province of Zuid-Holland, shortly before 6pm on Thursday 1 May 2025. The terrace was busy at the time. Witnesses described a man walking up with his face uncovered, firing three shots at close range and running off into the park surrounding the hotel. The victim, a Turkish national, died at the scene. Police released a description and images of the gunman, who remains at large, and of a second suspect who was seen standing with him at the entrance to the park for several minutes before the shooting. Investigators treat the killing as a contract killing. The victim had reported threats against his life shortly beforehand; he was himself wanted in Turkey, where prosecutors suspected him of involvement in the shooting of a businessman and his driver in the Turkish-controlled north of Cyprus in 2022, and he had recently made public statements about prominent Turkish political and business figures. On 13 November 2025 a 47-year-old man was arrested in Germany at the request of the Dutch authorities on suspicion of involvement, and he was surrendered to the Netherlands at the end of January 2026; he is not suspected of firing the shots, and how he is connected to the case has not been made public. On 23 March 2026 a 34-year-old Turkish man with no fixed address was arrested in France, suspected of being the gunman; he was held there on a weapons charge while the Netherlands sought his surrender. Police are still looking for a third person believed to have been involved.

A 16-year-old girl was killed in Mława, in Poland's Masovian Voivodeship, on the evening of 23 April 2025, the day she met the suspect. She was reported missing the following day, and her body was found on 1 May 2025 in scrubland near a production plant belonging to the suspect's family. A post-mortem examination found that she died of extensive head injuries caused by multiple blows. The suspect, who was 17 at the time, was known to the victim and was charged in May 2025 with murder committed with particular cruelty. He was detained in Greece and surrendered to Poland under a European Arrest Warrant. On 13 August 2026 the district prosecutor's office in Płock closed its investigation and filed an indictment against him, now 18, at the regional court in Płock. Twenty witnesses were questioned and 21 expert opinions obtained during the proceedings. He faces up to 30 years' imprisonment and remains in pre-trial detention until the end of September. Experts assessed that his mental state allows him to take part in the proceedings and conduct his own defence.

A 47-year-old woman was found unresponsive at her partner's house on O'Brien Street in Waterford city on the morning of 25 January 2025 and was pronounced dead a short time later. The State Pathologist gave the cause of death as blunt force traumatic injuries to the head and abdomen, and told the trial she had found extensive external and internal injuries whose overall pattern was consistent with a sustained assault, including bruising around both eyes consistent with direct trauma such as a punch and neck injuries consistent with compression by a hand. A 35-year-old man is on trial for her murder at the Central Criminal Court. The prosecution case is that the injuries were the result of a violent assault; the defence contends that she sustained them accidentally in falls after drinking. The trial opened on 9 July 2026 before a jury of five men and seven women, and the jury began its deliberations on 27 July 2026 after the judge completed his charge.

A 76-year-old woman was stabbed to death in Den Dolder on 2 January 2025. She was attacked without warning in the street in broad daylight, on her way home, and was stabbed seventeen times. The man responsible, then 29, was at the time required to stay at a psychiatric clinic in the town following a series of assaults, and was on leave on the day of the attack. On 22 July 2026 the district court in Utrecht convicted him and imposed eight years' imprisonment together with tbs, compulsory psychiatric treatment — a heavier sentence than the six years and tbs the prosecution had demanded. The court found the killing premeditated: he had bought a knife several days beforehand and hidden it under a small bridge, and had made repeated online searches about killing someone and about the sentence murder carries. He was assessed as only partially criminally responsible.

A man killed his mother at their shared home in Monor, Pest county, in January 2025, according to the charge against him. No source read for this record gives the day of the month, so the date is recorded at month precision. On the day she disappeared, by his own account, the two argued because he had asked her for money for alcohol from the shop and she refused. The argument escalated to the point where he struck her so hard that she fell to the ground, where she lay for hours while he went into town to deal with errands. Fearing that he would be held to account, he concealed her body in the concrete of the house terrace. He then reported her missing at the Monor police station. Officers searched for her for a year without result, although a number of suspicious circumstances arose: an ambulance had come that day for the woman's sick daughter and, unusually, the mother did not accompany her; the man renovated the terrace at exactly that time; and a rumour spread in the town that his mother had been in a relationship, which he had started himself without mentioning it to the police. He eventually confessed everything. He was taken into custody and attempted to take his own life at the police station while awaiting the order for his detention. The county chief prosecutor's office charged him with homicide. At a preparatory hearing at the Budapest-area court on 9 September 2026 he did not waive his right to a trial, did not admit the offence and declined to testify. Had he admitted it, the judge could have given judgment the same day; instead the court will hear witnesses and a psychological expert at the next trial day.

A 29-year-old woman was stabbed to death in the Usera district of Madrid in the early hours of Monday 30 December 2024. Officers called to a fourth-floor flat at about 02:00 found her with knife wounds to the neck and right armpit, and paramedics could only confirm her death at the scene. Her former partner, a 60-year-old man, had fled the flat and was arrested nearby a short time later. A restraining order protecting her from him was in force at the time, imposed after several complaints of abuse, and she had been placed at the highest police alert level after three such complaints. Neighbours said they had heard arguments between the couple. According to the first enquiries she had asked him to stop harassing and threatening her, and he had not accepted the end of the relationship. The government delegation against gender-based violence confirmed the killing as a case of gender-based violence; she was the 47th woman killed in Spain that year in such circumstances, and she left a young daughter. The trial opened at the Provincial Court of Madrid on 11 September 2026 with the selection of a jury and the parties' opening statements, the accused being due to give evidence the following Monday. It is the third trial he has faced in connection with the same woman, having already been convicted of threats and of assaults against her. Giving evidence on 14 September 2026, the accused admitted stabbing her during an argument after she had gone out for the night without him, and admitted breaching the restraining order imposed on 22 November 2024. The prosecution seeks 26 years' imprisonment for murder and breach of the order. Counsel for the family told the court they would seek compensation from the State for failing to monitor her protection correctly, addressing the claim to the Ministry of Justice and, where appropriate, the Ministry of the Interior, and bringing a civil action against the Government if the administrative claim went unanswered.

Two people were found killed at a house in Ski, in Akershus outside Oslo, on Saturday 14 December 2024: a woman in her seventies and her son, a man in his forties. A third member of the household, the woman's daughter and the man's sister, then in her forties, was arrested and charged with both killings. All three were registered at the same address. In the days after the killings her defence lawyer said she had given a detailed account, accepted criminal guilt as charged at that stage and wished to cooperate with the police, and that the police had requested a preliminary psychological assessment. Her trial ran for five days at Follo og Nordre Østfold district court. On Friday 21 August 2026 the state prosecutor asked for a sentence of 17 years' imprisonment, arguing that the killings were carried out in a particularly ruthless manner against two people who were in her care and who trusted her. Counsel for the victims' family sought damages, compensation and forfeiture of her inheritance rights. Her defence asked for acquittal. What happened was not disputed at trial. The accused admitted killing her mother and her brother but did not accept criminal guilt, and the question before the court was whether she was criminally sane at the time. A forensic psychiatric assessment was central to the case: court-appointed experts diagnosed severe depression with psychotic symptoms. The mother died of heavy pressure to the neck, according to the forensic pathologists. The brother was killed with a knife; the court heard that considerable force had been used and that one of the stab wounds had passed through a rib. Evidence at trial described a household in severe decay, and the woman had taken on an increasing and very extensive care burden at home from 2015 onwards. On 8 September 2026 the court acquitted her, finding that she lacked criminal responsibility at the time of the acts and that there was no basis for committal to compulsory mental health care. She was ordered to pay over 400,000 kroner in compensation to her surviving brother but did not lose her inheritance rights. The prosecutor said it would be for the Director of Public Prosecutions to decide whether to appeal.

A 25-year-old Dutch man was shot dead while working at a cannabis club in Fuengirola, on the Costa del Sol in the province of Málaga, on 7 December 2024. The attacker used a semi-automatic weapon. The suspect, a Belgian national who was 17 at the time, is alleged to have been recruited as a contract killer and to have been sent to kill someone other than the man he shot. He was first arrested in Ghent in June 2025 under a European arrest warrant and transferred to Spain two months later, where he was held in a juvenile detention centre. He was released in May 2026 after the nine-month legal maximum for pre-trial detention expired without a trial beginning or precautionary measures being sought, and then disappeared. In August 2026, now 19, he was arrested again in northern Belgium. The East Flanders prosecutor's office reported the arrest.

The juvenile court convicted him and sentenced him to 17 years. On 10 September 2026 the Court of Appeal in Bologna reduced the sentence to 15 years. It granted general mitigating circumstances at the request of the prosecutor general's office, after the young man, now 17, confessed to the killing at the first appeal hearing.

A 30-year-old man disappeared in Oslo on 29 September 2024. In the night leading into 30 September he drove to the Torshov area of the city, and his mobile phone was in use until the following morning. There has been no sign of life from him since. Police initially treated the case as a disappearance, but from the spring of 2025 they investigated it as a killing. In February 2026 they released a photograph of the car he had used on the night he vanished. His body has not been found and no cause of death has been established. On 10 September 2026 a man in his 30s was arrested and charged with the killing. Oslo District Court ordered him held in custody for four weeks with a ban on letters and visits. He denies criminal guilt through his defence counsel. Police have said the two had some form of relationship but have not described it, and have not ruled out further arrests. The man was already in custody in connection with a separate case that is under appeal. Counsel for the bereaved family said they had been told of the arrest and hoped it would help bring an answer to what happened.

A 69-year-old man was killed at Cutro, in the province of Crotone, on 21 September 2024, according to the case brought against his wife and their son. His body has never been found; investigators believe it was thrown into the waters of the river Tacina, in the locality of Steccato di Cutro. On 28 September 2024 his wife went to the carabinieri station at Cutro to report him missing, saying he had disappeared a week earlier, on 21 September. From that point he appeared to have vanished. Carabinieri investigated for a full year, using telephone and environmental intercepts on several of the victim's relatives and interviewing many people, until evidence began to emerge that led them to believe his wife and their son were involved in his killing on that date. Both were entered on the register of suspects in December 2025. Carabinieri RIS officers and police divers from Messina carried out several searches to recover the body, which has not been located. Investigators documented what they describe as repeated attempts by the pair to divert the inquiry: reporting the disappearance a week after it was said to have happened, agreeing between themselves on the accounts they would give to investigators, buying several litres of bleach in order, according to the accusation, to clean the scene, and giving contradictory statements that were found on checking to be untrue. On 30 September 2026 carabinieri arrested the victim's wife, aged 60, and their son, aged 28, both from Cutro, executing an order of pre-trial detention in prison issued by the investigating judge of Crotone at the request of the local public prosecutor. Both are accused of homicide and of concealing a corpse, acting jointly.

A 37-year-old woman was seriously wounded in her home in the Chasséstraat in the De Baarsjes neighbourhood of Amsterdam-West on the evening of Friday 16 August 2024, and died of her injuries in hospital two days later, on Sunday 18 August. Police were called at about 8.50pm and found the wounded woman, her partner and her six-year-old daughter in the flat. The partner, then 27, was arrested at the scene and the child was placed with a relative. The woman had suffered a wound to her leg that severed an artery and caused heavy blood loss. Neighbours later said they had heard what sounded like an argument. The prosecution alleges that the accused inflicted the wound with a shard of glass during a row, and is trying him for manslaughter, with the alternative charge of grievous bodily harm resulting in death if that is not made out. It regards a fallen vase as an unlikely cause of an arterial wound to the upper leg, which it says must have been inflicted with considerable force, and it points to a documented pattern of difficulty controlling aggression on the part of the accused, who had previously undergone treatment for it. The accused denies responsibility. He maintains that he was asleep and that the victim injured herself on a vase that had fallen, and he denies that any argument took place. At a pro-forma hearing in November 2024 forensic examination had produced few clear indications either way, and what happened in the flat that evening remains disputed. On 27 August 2026 the prosecution demanded a sentence of eight years' imprisonment. The accused, by then 29, had been in custody for two years. Judgment was scheduled for 10 September 2026.

A 32-year-old man from Valladolid died in the early hours of Saturday 24 February 2024 in Burgos, where he was attending a bachelor party. He was struck by a single, very hard punch that killed him almost instantly. Police at first found no sign of an assault, but forensic work and witness statements later established that he had been hit in an unexpected attack. A 23-year-old man from Burgos was arrested early the following day and remanded in custody without bail. Investigators had considered whether the victim was attacked because he was from Valladolid, but the jury at the trial did not find that motive proven. In February 2026 the Burgos provincial court convicted the attacker of reckless homicide (homicidio imprudente) rather than murder, and sentenced him to four years in prison and to pay 250,000 euros in compensation. The prosecution and the family appealed, seeking a retrial. In September 2026 the High Court of Justice of Castilla y León upheld the conviction and sentence, while criticising the trial judge's conduct of the proceedings. The family said it would not take the case to the Supreme Court.

A 14-year-old boy from the province of Vicenza died in January 2024 of a femoral osteosarcoma that his parents had declined to have treated by conventional medicine. His illness began in December 2022 with sudden leg pain; a specialist examination at a Vicenza hospital produced the cancer diagnosis, and a second opinion at a Bologna institute confirmed a particularly aggressive tumour. His parents, followers of the so-called "Hamer method", refused radiotherapy and standard oncological treatment, signed him out of hospital, and also withheld medication prescribed by his paediatrician, using clay compresses and "natural" anti-inflammatories instead. His decline lasted roughly two years. Both parents are on trial before the Corte d'Assise in Vicenza, charged with intentional homicide with indirect intent. Court-appointed experts filed their report on 7 September 2026, concluding that the boy could have been saved had the standard chemotherapy and surgical protocols been followed, and rejecting the defence's argument that there was no causal link between the parents' decisions and their son's death. The report also raises the possibility that neurotoxic preparations were administered to him. The next hearing is set for 16 September 2026.

A 37-year-old man was shot dead in an open street on Nyropsgade in central Copenhagen on the afternoon of 19 October 2023. The gunman, an 18-year-old Swedish national at the time, was disguised as a food-delivery courier, wearing a Just Eat jacket and cap and carrying the pistol in a Wolt thermal bag. He was sentenced to life imprisonment by the district court, and on 19 August 2026 the Eastern High Court upheld that sentence, rejecting his account of an economic dispute with the victim as unconvincing. Defence counsel has said it will seek to appeal to the Supreme Court.

On 29 July 2026 the Zurich district court convicted a 53-year-old Hungarian man of murder and sentenced him to 13 years and 5 months in prison. The court also ordered preventive detention, finding that the risk of him reoffending with the gravest violence remained clearly elevated, and imposed a 12-year expulsion from Switzerland to follow the sentence. The victim's life partner was awarded 40,000 Swiss francs in compensation. The judgment is not yet legally binding and may be appealed.

Two 19-year-old students and a 65-year-old school caretaker were stabbed to death in Nottingham on 13 June 2023. Three further people were injured in the same series of attacks and survived. In 2024 the attacker, a man with paranoid schizophrenia, was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order after admitting three counts of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and three counts of attempted murder. A statutory public inquiry is examining the events, acts and omissions that led to the killings, and has taken evidence from local authorities, health professionals, police officers and the attacker's family. At closing submissions on 8 September 2026, counsel to the inquiry reported the conclusions of a panel of medical professionals that had assessed the emergency response and the survivability of the victims' injuries: more rapid administration of blood products could have improved one victim's chance of reaching hospital and possibly surgery, so that his death was classed as "potentially preventable", although his chance of surviving his injuries was far less than 50 per cent and would have required multiple other rapid and meticulous steps. The other two deaths were found not to have been preventable. The inquiry also addressed evidence that emerged after its hearings had concluded in June 2026. Police had found a holdall at the attacker's former address in the days after the attack containing notebooks that were not disclosed to the inquiry until June 2026, in which he described himself as God and claimed police had mind-reading software. Other documents recovered from a bin at the property contained notes on explosives; the inquiry heard these were not identified or taken into account by police, nor made available to prosecutors or to psychiatric experts. The inquiry was also not told until after the hearings closed of violent assaults he had committed on colleagues in 2021 and in February 2023. Earlier evidence had detailed a string of violent incidents in the years before the attacks that led to him being sectioned four times in two years, and an arrest warrant was outstanding at the time of the attacks after he failed to appear in court over an alleged assault on a police officer. The inquiry's chair called the late disclosure disappointing and directed core participants to provide corrections and omissions by 31 December 2026. A report is due to be published in 2027.

On 7 September 2026 the district court in The Hague convicted the man, then 43, of murder, finding the killing both intentional and premeditated. It sentenced him to fifteen years' imprisonment and imposed a hospital order with compulsory treatment, concluding that a pathological disorder of the mental faculties was present at the time of the offence and had contributed to it, and that the order was necessary to protect the safety of others. A woman was stabbed to death on the morning of Monday 20 March 2023 in the entrance hall of an apartment building on a quiet street in the 12th arrondissement of Paris, not far from the place de la Bastille. On 25 August 2022 two serving Bulgarian police officers were killed at the "Trapezitsa" roundabout in Burgas when the bus they were attempting to stop struck their patrol car. The vehicle, carrying migrants, had been pursued by border police from a checkpoint on the Malko Tarnovo–Burgas road after twice failing to stop; at an earlier checkpoint an officer had to jump onto the crash barrier to avoid being run down. The officers blocked the road with their patrol car at the roundabout, but the bus neither braked nor slowed, dragging the car through metal barriers and several kiosks before coming to rest on grass. The court heard that the injuries were incompatible with survival. The driver, a Syrian national accused of smuggling migrants, was convicted of the killings. A district court sentenced him to 20 years in February 2025; following an appeal by the prosecution, which regarded that sentence as disproportionate to the gravity of the offence, the appellate court replaced it with life imprisonment. His defence maintains the deaths were caused by negligence rather than intent and has said it will appeal to the Supreme Court of Cassation.

Deux militants d'ultradroite sont jugés devant la cour d'assises de Paris à partir du lundi 7 septembre 2026, l'un pour assassinat, l'autre pour tentative d'assassinat visant l'ami de la victime. Tous deux sont en détention provisoire depuis leur arrestation, quatre jours après les faits. Deux autres personnes sont poursuivies pour complicité. Le lundi 14 septembre 2026, la mère de la victime a témoigné devant la cour. Le mercredi 23 septembre 2026, au terme de plus de trois semaines de débats, l'avocat général a requis 27 ans de réclusion criminelle contre l'accusé principal et 20 ans contre le second accusé, sans période de sûreté. A 14-year-old boy died in January 2022 at the house in Turnhout where he lived with his father, a villa rented on the Kampheidelaan. His body was not found until 25 February 2022, about eight weeks after his death, when police entered the house. They acted after repeated reports from his mother, who had not heard from him for two months. He was found dead in bed in an upstairs room, and his body was in an advanced state of decomposition. Six adults who lived together in the house, three men and three women including the boy's father, were arrested. According to the investigation, they systematically isolated the boy and deliberately gave him no care or food while knowing he was seriously ill. A high dose of ketamine was later found in a sample of his hair. The accused deny having known anything about the drug. The six went on trial for murder before the Antwerp assize court on 11 September 2026. They face life imprisonment if convicted.

A four-year-old girl died on 18 September 2021 at a dental practice in Kronberg im Taunus, Hesse, after being anaesthetised for dental treatment. The anaesthetist had drawn propofol contaminated with fungi and bacteria from a single vial and administered it to an adult patient and then to four children over the course of the day, working without the required assistance and in serious breach of hygiene rules. The girl, the last patient of the day, died that night of multi-organ failure; the three other children fell severely ill, and when their parents telephoned the following day the doctor told them the symptoms were normal and that no ambulance was needed. In November 2024 the regional court convicted him of manslaughter by omission and three counts of attempted manslaughter by omission, sentencing him to ten years and six months' imprisonment. In January 2026 the Federal Court of Justice overturned central parts of that verdict, finding that the regional court had set the threshold for a murder conviction too high, and ordered a fresh examination of whether he had acted to conceal his own errors. The retrial opened before the Frankfurt regional court on 19 August 2026, with prosecutors alleging murder on the grounds that he deliberately delayed emergency care. A verdict is expected in early October 2026.

On 28 April 2021 three robbers entered a jeweller's shop in Grinzane Cavour, in the province of Cuneo. The jeweller shot and killed two of them and wounded the third. He was finally convicted of the double homicide and of the attempted murder of the third robber and sentenced to 14 years and 9 months' imprisonment, the courts having ruled out that he acted in lawful self-defence. In September 2026 the Supervisory Court of Turin rejected his request to defer the execution of his sentence, or alternatively to serve it under house arrest, while a petition for a pardon lodged with the President of the Republic by his wife is pending. The court held that the decision on clemency belongs exclusively to the Head of State and that the judiciary should not anticipate it, while acknowledging that the reaction of a person unjustly attacked cannot be measured with precision. A 33-year-old woman was strangled at her home in Sofia in 2021. The investigation established that her husband killed her, and that his father helped to conceal the crime by transporting the body in a suitcase and dumping it in a tailings pond near Pernik. After she disappeared, her husband said publicly that she had gone to the gym and took part in the search for her. At first instance both men were sentenced to life imprisonment, the court accepting the prosecution's case that the killing was fully intentional and planned in advance, and ordering substantial damages to the victim's family. The proceedings at that instance concluded in under eleven months. On appeal the Sofia Appellate Court reduced the husband's sentence from life imprisonment to 20 years and acquitted his father entirely. A 59-year-old man from Coín, in the province of Málaga, was killed at a home in the town at some point around 2020; his disappearance was reported that year and the date of his death has not been established. A suspect has confessed to killing him there, dismembering the body and moving the remains to several locations in the nearby municipality of Alhaurín de la Torre. The investigation began in June 2025, when municipal workers in Alhaurín de la Torre found a human skull wrapped in a bag inside a service box on the Pinos de Alhaurín estate. Guardia Civil homicide and forensic officers took the case, and DNA testing matched the remains to the man missing since 2020. Investigators then focused on his social and personal circle and, through documentary and database analysis and judicially authorised technical measures, on an acquaintance of his. Ground-penetrating radar, drones and dogs trained to detect biological remains were deployed to search for the rest of the body. The suspect was arrested on Tuesday 28 July 2026 and confessed. He led investigators to the sites where further skeletal remains were recovered; those remains are awaiting genetic analysis for definitive confirmation. No charge has been reported.

A lawyer was shot dead outside his home in Amsterdam on 18 September 2019. In the period before the killing he had been acting for the state's witness in the Marengo liquidation trial. Two men were sentenced to thirty years in prison for the murder. A further group was prosecuted for its part in preparing it: the Amsterdam court of appeal found that some of them had carried out reconnaissance around the lawyer's home and office in the run-up to the killing, and that the group supplied the cars used by the gunmen. On 7 September 2026 the court of appeal imposed increased sentences of up to eleven years and three months on six defendants for membership of a criminal organisation, and on five of them also for the attempted murder of another man who was beaten with striking weapons in Utrecht on 30 October 2019 and suffered a basal skull fracture. One of the six absconded and was arrested in Paris on 16 September 2026. His lawyer said he was expected to be surrendered to the Netherlands shortly.

An investigative journalist was killed in Bidnija, Malta, on 16 October 2017, when a bomb placed in her car exploded shortly after she left her home. The commemoration held each year at the scene takes place at three in the afternoon, the time she was killed. Her father has described paid assassins watching and waiting from across the valley from the family home in the days before the attack. The two men who carried out the bombing pleaded guilty at the opening of their trial on 14 October 2022 and were each sentenced to forty years' imprisonment. Their appeal, in which they sought to have the sentence quashed and a fresh trial held, was dismissed by the Court of Criminal Appeal on 22 November 2023. A third man had been sentenced to fifteen years in February 2021, a reduced term granted in recognition of the information he gave about this killing and about the killing of a lawyer in 2015. On 22 January 2026 the Court of Appeal dismissed the appeals of four further men convicted in connection with this killing and that of the lawyer; two of them were convicted of complicity in the journalist's killing and of possessing explosive material. On 2 September 2026 a jury acquitted, by an eight-to-one majority, the businessman accused of commissioning the killing. Prosecutors had alleged that he paid an intermediary €150,000 to arrange it. Under Maltese law an appeal against a jury acquittal is restricted to specific legal grounds, including serious procedural irregularities or a manifestly wrong application of the law; the prosecution has said it intends to appeal. On 16 September 2026, nine years after the killing, thousands marched through Valletta to renew calls for justice, gathering in front of parliament and moving to the journalist's protest memorial opposite the court building. The home affairs minister said police would be given whatever resources, equipment or foreign assistance they requested for any further investigations, while insisting investigators must be left to work independently.

A woman disappeared from her home village of Hornachos, in the province of Badajoz, on the evening of 9 May 2017. She had stepped out briefly to see off a family whose daughter she looked after, leaving her phone and keys behind and telling her son she would be back to make dinner. She never returned, and for almost nine years the case remained unsolved, although her family had long suspected two neighbours. In March 2026 the Central Operative Unit of the Guardia Civil arrested two brothers, her neighbours, and searched their house. Skeletal remains found under a cemented and tiled inspection chamber in the patio were identified by biological analysis as hers. Days after the arrest the younger brother confessed to the killing and exculpated his brother. Both are held in pre-trial detention under an investigating court in Villafranca de los Barros on suspicion of murder and unlawful detention. On 14 September 2026 the two men were brought from prison to their house in Hornachos for a judicial reconstruction of the crime, where they were met by angry neighbours. Only the elder brother took part in the reconstruction; the younger, who had confessed, did not cooperate.

A man was stabbed to death outside a flat at Mørkved, outside Bodø town centre, in the night leading into 6 July 2010. Police were alerted that a person was bleeding heavily outside the flat. He was declared dead at the scene about an hour later, with multiple stab wounds. The next morning police arrested his 56-year-old landlord and friend, who had blood on his clothes and an injury to his face. He admitted stabbing the victim in the thigh but denied responsibility for the killing. Salten District Court convicted him and sentenced him to eleven years in prison. In February 2012 the Hålogaland Court of Appeal convicted him again and increased the sentence to twelve years, and the Supreme Court refused leave to appeal. In 2023 the Norwegian Criminal Cases Review Commission ordered the case reopened. It had considered a 2018 police interview in which a person described a conversation with a relative who was said to have confessed to the killing a few months before her death. After a renewed investigation with assistance from Kripos, the prosecution indicted the man for the killing again in September 2026, re-using the 2011 indictment. The Frostating Court of Appeal will decide whether he is convicted or acquitted. He has always denied the killing.

A student of just under 20 was stabbed to death in Innsbruck in June 2005. The search for her killer was unsuccessful for years: a suspect was arrested in 2013 but released after a few weeks, and the proceedings were discontinued in 2014 because the circumstantial evidence against him, which included DNA traces on his clothing, was not considered strong enough by prosecutors. In May 2026 the case was reopened against the same man. DNA traces attributed to him were identified on a cigarette that had been recovered from the crime scene, a telephone box; prosecutors say this places him at the scene, and attribute the late discovery to improved analytical methods. On that basis the suspicion was held to have hardened, the prosecution filed a murder charge, and the appeal court rejected the defence's challenge to it. The trial is listed for 19 and 23 October 2026 at the Innsbruck criminal court, more than twenty years after the killing. The accused, now 43, lives in Australia; his lawyer has said he will travel to Austria voluntarily.

Two teenage girls disappeared in Radzymin, in Masovia, on 6 August 2000. They had been at a local fête with friends and were due home at about eleven o'clock at night, but never reached the meeting arranged with their parents. Despite the involvement of the police and of the local community, it was not established for more than twenty years what had happened to them. The proceedings were discontinued and their bodies were never found. Officers of the homicide and criminal terror unit of the metropolitan police headquarters reopened the investigation. Analysis of the evidence, and a reconstruction of the sequence of events at the fête, identified the people who had last seen the two girls alive. Two men who had been in the victims' company on the day of the disappearance were charged with their murder in connection with repeated collective rape, and an indictment against them was filed with the court. A third suspect, a 45-year-old already serving a sentence for similar offences, was not ultimately included in the indictment for want of sufficient evidence. The metropolitan police said close cooperation between the National Prosecutor's Office and the unit's officers had allowed the proceedings to be concluded.
