The body of a 40-year-old woman from Venlo was found by a walker on the afternoon of Saturday 22 August 2026, on the bank of the Maas near the Professor Gilissensingel in Venlo. Police treated the death as a possible crime from the outset. On Tuesday 25 August a 22-year-old man from Tegelen was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter or murder, and his home was searched. He was held in custody under restrictions and brought before the examining magistrate that Friday. In September 2026 investigators found that the woman had also been raped before her death, and the suspect, who remains in detention, is now suspected of qualified manslaughter.
