The remains of two young soldiers from French Polynesia were recovered in the Bouches-du-Rhône in July 2026, several years after their families reported them missing. Six adult members of one family, originally from New Caledonia and living in the Claret quarter of Toulon, have been under formal investigation since May 2026 for murder, human trafficking, unlawful imprisonment by an organised gang and failure to report crimes, the exact grounds varying between them. Five of the six are in pre-trial detention. According to the Toulon public prosecutor's office, the family is suspected of having exploited the isolation of young servicemen who had come from the Pacific islands to be stationed in Toulon, robbing them, assaulting them and holding them captive in the Toulon area between 2011 and 2023. Seven other young Polynesian soldiers told investigators they had been "progressively stripped of their means of payment and their identity documents, assaulted and held captive". Residents of the quarter, where the Polynesian community is large, described the family arriving at parties at their height with alcohol and provisions. The investigation was still under way at the time of the cited report.
