On the afternoon of 10 August 2026 a 42-year-old woman was shot and wounded in the Baixa district of Lisbon. According to police accounts, an argument broke out between two men who both sold pressed laurel to tourists in the streets of the Baixa. One of them drew a small-calibre pistol and fired at the other, missing him. The bullet struck the woman, who was buying pastries in a nearby shop. She was hit in the abdomen and taken to São José hospital. The intended target was not injured. The police detained the man alleged to have fired the shot on 11 August, after searching his home in connection with a separate domestic violence proceeding. A shotgun was seized there, but the weapon used in the shooting was not recovered. He was to be brought before a court on suspicion of attempted homicide, and was later released subject to reporting conditions. On 15 September 2026 three suspects surrendered to the Judicial Police after officers failed to find them during a search operation, and were questioned that evening. Reports indicate they may face charges of attempted homicide.
