A 40-year-old inmate was stabbed to death at about 15:00 on Monday 14 September 2026 in a corridor of the Forensic Therapeutic Centre (FTZ) Garsten, a secure institution for mentally ill offenders in Upper Austria. The attack was recorded by a surveillance camera. Prison officers who heard screams arrived within moments and attempted resuscitation, but he died of several stab wounds to the chest. A 63-year-old fellow inmate is suspected of the killing and has confessed. The Steyr public prosecutor's office confirmed that the weapon was a butter knife and is investigating on suspicion of murder, naming frustration at not feeling heard by the authorities as a possible motive. It was the second killing of a prisoner in an Austrian justice facility within two weeks. The Ombudsman Board and a commission set up by the Ministry of Justice had already reported systemic failings and severe staff shortages in the forensic detention system; according to the Ombudsman Board, no specialist psychiatric staff are present at FTZ Garsten at night or from Friday to Sunday.

Nach Angaben der steirischen Exekutive liegt ein offensichtliches Gewaltdelikt vor. Kurz nach der telefonischen Alarmierung der Polizei wurde ein 23-jähriger Verdächtiger aus einem familiären Naheverhältnis zum Opfer noch im Stiegenhaus festgenommen und zu Mittag in das Polizeianhaltezentrum gebracht. Über die Art der tödlichen Verletzungen, eine mögliche Tatwaffe oder ein Motiv wurden keine Informationen veröffentlicht, da die Vernehmungen des Verdächtigen sowie weiterer Personen noch bevorstanden. Die Polizei hielt fest, dass keine Gefahr für die Bevölkerung vor Ort bestand.

A woman was seriously injured in the city of Salzburg on 10 August 2026 in an attack for which her 63-year-old former partner is under investigation for attempted murder. According to the reporting, the man wore a balaclava and lay in wait for her. He is alleged to have strangled her and attacked her with a rolling pin, striking her repeatedly on the head from behind. She sustained numerous injuries. The accused is in pre-trial detention. The case was reported by Salzburg media on Saturday 29 August 2026, nineteen days after the attack.

A man stabbed his wife thirteen times in the back in the Donaustadt district of Vienna on 2 May 2026. She was sitting on the floor playing with their three-year-old son at the time. The couple had been married for thirty years and had four children together. The man, then 46, had suspected his wife of an affair after an illness required her to move temporarily to Vienna for treatment, where their older children were living as students. Prosecutors told the court there was no concrete basis for that suspicion. After an argument by telephone he drove to Vienna and tried to persuade her to return home with him immediately; when she refused, he drew a pocket knife with an eight-centimetre blade and attacked her. The victim's adult children came to her aid when they heard her cries, overpowered their father and held him until police arrived. Two of them suffered minor injuries, to a calf and to a right thumb. The stab wounds inflicted on the victim caused multiple penetrating injuries, and she survived. The man was tried for attempted murder before a jury at the Vienna regional court on 9 September 2026. The prosecutor described the attack as a horrifying act of bloodshed and an insidious assault. His defence lawyer argued that he had been emotionally overwhelmed and that an escalating exceptional situation had led to an entirely uncontrolled act. The accused, who came to Austria from Afghanistan, was described in court as well integrated, in steady employment and without previous convictions.

A 28-year-old woman was shot dead at close range in a flat in Kottingbrunn, in the Baden district of Lower Austria, in May 2026. She was hit three times in the head. Austrian reporting describes the killing as a femicide. A 27-year-old man is held in custody in Wiener Neustadt as the principal suspect, and took part in a reconstruction at the scene in early August 2026. On 10 August 2026 a second man, an Italian national who was about to turn 35, was arrested in Germany on a European arrest warrant issued by the Wiener Neustadt public prosecutor's office on suspicion of murder or participation in murder. Extradition was pending at the time of the cited report. The principal suspect has implicated him heavily.

An 87-year-old woman was killed on 19 January 2026 in her room at a senior residence in the Döbling district of Vienna. According to the indictment, the suspect went to her room, pushed her onto the bed, strangled her and is believed to have suffocated her with a pillow. He is then alleged to have opened the safe in her room and taken the jewellery inside it along with at least 500 euros in cash. The suspect and the victim had known each other for some time. He is reported to have been a regular visitor to the residence, where a relative of his partner lives. From December 2024 onwards he is said to have repeatedly borrowed money from the woman, ending up owing her more than 20,000 euros which, contrary to an agreement between them, he did not repay. The 61-year-old has been charged with murder and is due to stand trial at the Vienna regional court on 13 August 2026.

A 78-year-old woman was suffocated at her home in Mäder, in the Feldkirch district of Vorarlberg, in October 2025. Her 57-year-old daughter, who had been visiting, was found to have held her mouth and nose shut. A court medical examiner found bleeding and bruising at several points on the body consistent with defensive and struggle injuries, a compressed chest and discolouration around the mouth and nose, and concluded that blunt force had been applied. The defence suggested the victim's lung disease might have caused her death; the examiner found the overall findings pointed unambiguously to a killing, and investigators excluded any other perpetrator. On Monday 3 August 2026 a jury court in Feldkirch committed the daughter to a forensic therapeutic centre. A psychiatric opinion excluded criminal responsibility at the time of the act, so she was not convicted: the jury found unanimously that the act would have constituted murder had she been criminally responsible. She had worked for over twenty years in a social-care profession and had long struggled with anxiety, depression, agitation and restlessness, had repeatedly stopped taking her medication, and says she remembers nothing of the act, stating only that it was possible she had killed her mother. She accepted the ruling and the prosecution waived any appeal, so it is final.

A student of just under 20 was stabbed to death in Innsbruck in June 2005. The search for her killer was unsuccessful for years: a suspect was arrested in 2013 but released after a few weeks, and the proceedings were discontinued in 2014 because the circumstantial evidence against him, which included DNA traces on his clothing, was not considered strong enough by prosecutors. In May 2026 the case was reopened against the same man. DNA traces attributed to him were identified on a cigarette that had been recovered from the crime scene, a telephone box; prosecutors say this places him at the scene, and attribute the late discovery to improved analytical methods. On that basis the suspicion was held to have hardened, the prosecution filed a murder charge, and the appeal court rejected the defence's challenge to it. The trial is listed for 19 and 23 October 2026 at the Innsbruck criminal court, more than twenty years after the killing. The accused, now 43, lives in Australia; his lawyer has said he will travel to Austria voluntarily.
